Montauk: The End -- and Why It Requires Serious Route Intelligence
Montauk is at the tip of Long Island, approximately 120 miles from Midtown Manhattan. The road to get there -- and back -- is one of the most studied traffic problems in the Northeast. Route 27 (Montauk Highway) passes through every Hamptons bottleneck: Bridgehampton's Butter Lane light, the East Hampton Herrick Park roundabout, the Amagansett pass-through, and then the open stretch from Napeague to Montauk Point. In summer, these bottlenecks can cascade. In fall and spring, the route is magnificent.
Your Luxury Limo has run the Montauk corridor since 2016. Our record for a Montauk to JFK trip is 2 hours 45 minutes on a winter weekday. Our record for the worst summer Friday is 4 hours 55 minutes. We tell clients both numbers. A 7 AM JFK departure from Montauk in July means a 3:30 AM pickup -- not 4:30. This is not negotiable advice; it is what the data shows.
Routes from Montauk: Route 27, Sunrise, & East Hampton Airport
From Montauk: westbound on Montauk Highway (Route 27) through Amagansett, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, and Southampton to County Road 39 or the Sunrise Highway bypass toward Riverhead. The Sunrise bypass is critical in summer -- it avoids the worst Southampton Route 27 congestion by heading north to Route 27A and then joining I-495 (LIE) at Exit 70 for the run west to JFK or the tunnel approaches to Manhattan.
For private aviation, East Hampton Airport (HTO) on Daniels Hole Road is approximately 20–25 minutes west and handles most major charter operators. We coordinate FBO ramp logistics there regularly. For clients requiring larger private terminal capacity, FOK (Gabreski in Westhampton) is approximately 45–55 minutes west -- still far more convenient than JFK or LGA for any Montauk guest.
